I have one needs repair
Someone watches Shango066 :)
I dont know if it luck or survivor bias, but I have an older near mint FD-10 that still works and I have a near mint FDL-310 not working with a white noise with a very faint picture and very weak audio, so highly likely the capacitors are gone. I heard rumors of Japanese made electronics made after 1986 used inferior capacitors.
that electronic load is cool! Does that work as a dummy load for sound amplifier too?
One more thing when you turn the power supply on that starts to run. Then it slows down and stops and then when you turn off the power supply the fan starts to run again and then it stops weird. Thank you, gunny
Can you tell me if the fan supposed to work all the time when you turn this power supply on? I picked one up with these Powers of Life and I had to replace the fan. The fan turns on and then it stops. I don't know if there's a problem with the capacitors or the rectifiers. Can you please help me out? Thank you, gunny
I just messed up my kenwood xr5s and nervous it’s not salvageable for this reason
Saving ancient PCs one fried ic at a time
use reference disk to bios setup .
So weird mine is out right now and I search why does my Optimum internet keep going out and I find your video thank you sir you're correct Optimum sux hard.
the 10 pin ribbon cable can easily be disconnected instead of desoldering the whole socket.. but don't feel bad i broke my little band switch too.. changed all the caps and only got sound to work, no picture but a backlit screen.. with the FDL-310 that is
This was great. I plan to print my own parts to fix the hinges on mine. It didn’t occur to me it might by the diffuser plate going yellow that causes the yellow tint on my 170 and not the backlight bulb. I’m not sure using the SD card for virtual memory is a good idea.
the god of repair👌
Any chance you kept your map and list of capacitors? I’d like to recap my FDL-3500 and will really benefit from your homework. :-)
I think I did, I just don't know where to post it
Would something like Google Docs or maybe posting 68kmla or TinkerDifferent?
I found this sound
That quad-core Pi would be more than able to do the job of even the IntelliSTAR!
True! But that really was not the point of this project, the point is keeping the original hardware running as well as it can.
I can see (in the not too distant future) a time when all the plastic parts for many old machines can be 3D printed to the same surface texture, colour and dimensions etc - including colour inserts like badges. The 3D scanning technology is getting there. So long as mint examples exist that can be used as a 'pattern' part. The problem will be getting the LCD panels!
Looking forward to hearing if the hinges hold up
Mind sharing where all the screw locations are to open one of these up?
Madness indeed! hehehehe I had no idea CCFLs we're getting redder when aging! I just assumed I was smoking too much whilst coding lol Thanks!
I have the same amp I don't see anything blown on the board any signs of heat I bought the amp used about a week ago and when you turn it on if you have it on bridge mode no matter what the volume settings at you'll see a big ark and it'll go into protection right away it'll be blinking and the speaker will make it up if you put it in on bridge mode the speaker will like being like a hiccup mode weather the volume is on or not I have not seen any type of fuse on this board like a 30 amp 40 amp etc any help would be greatly appreciated
I'm the past for targeted reflow with a heat gun I've used thick aluminum foil or doubled up regular aluminum foil as a shield for components while reflowing a component or reinstalling a new part with bga solder parts
This is fascinating. Never really knew much about these. That was quite a powerful computer for it's day and time. I bet it cost a good amount too! I was was under the thought that The Weather Channel was just using an Amiga 2000 or 3000 like many of the cable stations were using at the time for digital signage to be broadcasted on a channel. Local forecast background music is where I heard Kenny G saxophone music for the first time. I imagine TWC was responsible for his popularity at the time.
Thank you for the live n' learn reminder.. really, we all do thing and need to be reminded to stop and think and just do the extra steps. edit: why not take the time and small money to make the dim bulb tester ? could save your butt and a lot of rework/repair.
Old Sony gear was built like a tank - this was PEAK Sony era - aesthetics, design, the chonnnnk
Hello, could you repair my old zenith 325s if I send it to you ?
My timeline is a little bit stretched and it depends on what's going on with them, but I can't imagine them being too bad
I am really cuorius how did you put main battery appart? Could you explain it a little bit?
I have a D7 that I for sure did that reverse polarity thing to when I was younger. Almost assuredly has these similar parts damages as it doesn't power up either. This vid will be a great help fixing it! Thanks!
Nice work; time for Techknight’s 44.1kHz dance party!
Great job techknight! Impressive to see it come back to life. It is amazing what you can do.
Well done
Good catch! Most people would have called it a day after repairing the main DC-DC convertor. That 8v would have killed the controller. well done sir!
I have one of these that was acting up but almost worked, and then I accidentally fried it thanks to Sony's infamous center negative power supplies. Now it's a shelf piece. It might be fixable, will try someday...
Yikes 😬 well hopefully it's fixable just like this one was
I've right now on my bench a D-5. I've repaired the DC-DC circuitry, but no sled action or focus search. Do you have any tips?
Make sure all of your voltages are present. Also double check that secondary regulator which I had an issue with later on. If it's also damaged it can damage the microcontroller which will cause this
I have one of these I got a few years back, and was using it at work before the pandemic. It worked absolutely flawlessly until one day. It skipped a couple times playing a disc. When that one ended and I put in a new one, it had some trouble reading it. And then that was it. It wouldn't even read a disc anymore. I haven't been looking forward to troubleshooting it, knowing that 80s-era Sony portables were just a mess of tiny fragile wires inside. But some day I will, because it's a great little player, and like you saw, even handles CD-R just fine.
0:20 The Sony CDP-101 was the first commercially released CD player for consumers. It was made in 1982. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_CDP-101 )
Windows 95 requires 32 bit instructions, it won't work on 286. Maximum is Windows 3.11.
The model 30 286 had a CPU upgrade installed, so I guess it's actually a 386SX? I must admit I didn't watch the first part of the video...
Sorry, I was too fast. Later in the video he shows that it's a 486SX upgrade CPU.
I'm not as trained as you in how to program a new chip but I do have to service and program and repair a fleet of 40 different message boards and I'm trying teach myself how to be more self sufficient on our repairs. And greatly appreciate the video . Please more traffic board videos with more detail please.
I have the same sign, mine just says initializing, can you fix mint too :)
Great job! So great to see your process to fix these thingies.
You're so good at troubleshooting these thingies.
Bro, seeing the WS400 on a WatchMan was totally screenshot/post everywhere worthy. A marriage of two of the very best worlds of nostalgia.
I was having issues, and they sent 5 techs, and none of them could fix it, except for the last one. Guess what, I was charged $500+ because they incompetent technicians didn't know how to do their job. All that was needed was to swap the router. I spoke with the manager, and they were giving me a free month of HBO, and I had to pay the $500+ dollars. Fuck optimum! If I could switch, I would.😢
How's the Indextron image quality compared to a Trinitron?
They don't even compare. The indextron is cool in its own right but as far as image quality? Doesn't come close to a Trinitron
Plastic is made to melted ;) Honestly, great work! Fun to see the big-boy tools come out to play
Oh no! Now prisons will take more of these away knowing prisoners can install Wifi modules! I should try this on my Non-Wifi prisonbook.
First - I almost bought one of these laptops when they went up on ebay. Am now kinda glad I did not considering all the hoops to be jumped.
Great Video. Thank you. I just finished fixing a T1000SE myself. How did you open the ultrasonic welds of the battery pack? I am trying to get the battery apart as nice and clean as you did (26:48).
I slowly worked at it with a spudger tool until it popped apart
They weren't as good as CRT and dark rooms were way better. Limited viewing from the sides.
